{"id":2750,"date":"2014-03-07T22:16:23","date_gmt":"2014-03-08T03:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crto.on.ca\/?p=2750"},"modified":"2017-03-17T12:29:17","modified_gmt":"2017-03-17T16:29:17","slug":"silence-golden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crto.on.ca\/fr\/members-blog\/silence-golden\/","title":{"rendered":"When Silence is Not Golden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, a Toronto anesthesiologist had his certificate of registration revoked by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and was criminally sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting a number of female patients.\u00a0 Most of the offenses allegedly occurred in a busy hospital operating room while the patients where under anesthetic. I have no first-hand knowledge of this particular case or of any of the circumstances that surrounded it. \u00a0I mention it merely as an example where a health care professional failed to uphold even the most basic standards of their profession \u2013 and of society. \u00a0When a transgression like this occurs in the midst of a team environment, we are all left to wonder \u201chow could that happen\u201d and \u201cwhat could have been done to prevent or stop it?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Dr. Patricia Houston, president of the Canadian Anesthesiologists&rsquo; Society, spoke recently about the case on CBC Radio&rsquo;s\u00a0<i>Metro Morning<\/i>. \u00a0She said that it illustrates the \u201ccollective responsibility\u00a0\u00bb all health care professionals have to safeguard the patients in their care[1].\u00a0 It is important to remember that it cannot be assumed that someone else will bring a concern forward to the appropriate people or agency. \u00a0Admittedly, it can be challenging to report a coworker, especially if there are suspicions that something is not quite right but there\u2019s no clear cut evidence.\u00a0 An RT may feel that voicing their concerns will invite retaliation and make them appear disloyal to the team. They may also worry about damaging a colleague\u2019s reputation if their concerns turn out to be unfounded. However, an RT\u2019s primary accountability is to the patients receiving services within their organization and all patients are entitled to receive safe, competent and ethical care.<\/p>\r\n<p>Fortunately, there are several avenues that an RT can take if they feel another health care professional has behaved inappropriately or failed to provide the appropriate standard of care.\u00a0 First, if the conduct of the individual places patients in imminent danger, then the RT must immediately alert the appropriate person or department within their organization.\u00a0 If the colleague is a member of a regulated health care profession, the RT should also contact that person\u2019s regulatory College.\u00a0 It is each health regulatory college\u2019s duty to investigate complaints and determine if the cases merit further action.\u00a0 If an RT wishes to remain anonymous, it\u2019s best to contact the relevant College and find out what options they have. \u00a0There are often ways that Colleges can investigate an individual\u2019s concerns without revealing their identity.<\/p>\r\n<p>Patients need our support and advocacy\u2026not our silence.<\/p>\r\n<div><br clear=\"all\" \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\r\n<div>\r\n<p>[1] Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
