{"id":4854,"date":"2016-11-17T13:11:21","date_gmt":"2016-11-17T18:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crto.on.ca\/?p=4854"},"modified":"2016-11-17T13:12:02","modified_gmt":"2016-11-17T18:12:02","slug":"self-regulation-isnt-a-spectator-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crto.on.ca\/fr\/members-blog\/self-regulation-isnt-a-spectator-sport\/","title":{"rendered":"Self-regulation isn\u2019t a Spectator Sport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been hearing about large groups of people in the U.S. protesting the outcome of the recent presidential election.\u00a0 My first thought is \u201cgood for them\u201d and my second thought is \u201cI really hope they voted\u201d.\u00a0 In the run up to the U.S. election, it was estimated that between 80 and 100 million voting-age Americans would <em>not<\/em> cast their vote in the presidential election.\u00a0 Percentage wise, the voter turnout for Canadian \u00a0elections isn\u2019t usually much better.\u00a0 For some, there may be a legitimate reason; such as they may be ineligible to vote for one reason or another.\u00a0 And, in the U.S. anyway, there may be some other valid, political reasons why people decided not to cast their ballot this year (we won\u2019t get into that).\u00a0 But I think we can still surmise that there is a significant number of people don\u2019t vote in any election simply because they don\u2019t think voting matters.<\/p><p>The same thing \u2013 on a much, much small scale \u2013 happens here at the CRTO.\u00a0 The province has been divided up into 6 geographic districts.\u00a0 Every 3 years, an election is run in districts with recently vacated seats and RTs in those districts have the opportunity to put their name forward to run or to elect other RTs to fill those Council and Committee positions. \u00a0Unfortunately, most positions on Council or Committee are acclaimed, meaning that only one person put their name forward, and sometimes a position is left vacant for a period of time because not a single person ran in that district. Perhaps more disturbing, however, is the\u00a0low, low \u00ab\u00a0voter turnout\u00a0\u00bb.\u00a0 It seems that many RTs in Ontario don\u2019t seem to think that voting this this type of election matters much either.\u00a0<\/p><p>It is Barack Obama who has been quoted several\u00a0times as saying, \u201cdemocracy isn\u2019t a spectator sport\u201d (please forgive the shameless paraphrasing in the title).\u00a0 And I think, if recent events have taught us anything, we all need to think seriously about our role in all\u00a0democratic process \u2013 including the CRTO elections.<\/p><p>Elections are coming up again next year. Think about running, nominating someone who is interested in running or, at the very least, voting if a ballot comes your way.\u00a0 To paraphrase President Obama just a bit further, \u201cSelf-regulation is a participatory event.
