Welcome. Before you throw your hat into the ring, explore the core functions of the Council and its Committees. Remember, CRTO is a regulatory body, not an advocacy group.
Mandate: To ensure respiratory care services provided to the public are delivered in a safe and ethical manner. We protect the public, maintain competency, and uphold standards.
Council works with specific committees to fulfill statutory requirements. Composed of nine RRTs (Professional Members) and at least five Public Members appointed by the government.
Time Commitment: Attend at least four council meetings/year (1 in-person, rest virtual) plus assignment to at least two committees.
Reviews applications that do not automatically meet requirements and develops policies governing registration, exams, and educational program approval.
Time Commitment: Review materials beforehand. Attend five or more 1-hour virtual panel meetings each year.
Implements CRTO’s Quality Assurance Regulations, evaluates the Professional Development Program, and renders decisions on specialized matters like non-compliance.
Time Commitment: Generally three half-day virtual meetings/year plus approx. four 1-hour panels.
Ensures measures are in place to prevent and deal with sexual abuse of patients, including practice standards, guidelines, and funding for victims.
Time Commitment: Expect three half-day virtual meetings each year.
Reviews practice and conduct concerns regarding members. Panels address issues using established processes. Unresolved issues may go to Discipline.
Time Commitment: Assignment to five or more half-day virtual panels each year.
Conducts quasi-judicial hearings to consider facts related to referred matters. Empowered to suspend/revoke registration or impose terms.
Time Commitment: Hearings are rare but involve half to full-day in-person meetings when they occur.
*Professional Council and Committee members receive a per diem allowance for preparation and attendance.
